Rosewood
Found on the top of the line instruments for both marimbas and xylophones, Rosewood is known for its warmth and resonance properties. This makes Rosewood the ideal material for mallet bars.
Rosewood has become an endangered species of wood. This is because it is overharvested and takes a long time to grow. Additionally, it is a difficult wood to manipulate because of its density and high oil content. The most ideal Rosewood comes from Honduras.
It is important to note that each instrument manufacturer, such as Adams or Marimba One, has their own specifications for tuning and classifying the quality of their Rosewood bars.
Padouk
Padouk is an excellent alternative to Rosewood bars. Similar to Rosewood, this is a natural material originates from Africa. Padouk responds very similar to Rosewood. However, it has a shorter sustain and is denser. Because of this it more durable in the classroom. This wood is an excellent choice for a beginning instrument or tight budgets.
Synthetic
Synthetic mallet bars such as Zelon or Acoustalon are designed for the needs of today’s marching ensembles. Mallet bars made from synthetic materials can offer a high-quality tone. Additionally, they have a projection that will withstand the outdoor elements.
